At Lysterfield Primary School, we place the nurturing and development of a curious mind as central to our student learning outcomes. We offer a comprehensive curriculum that focuses on Literacy and Numeracy as well as effective development of the ‘Whole Child’ that includes looking after their wellbeing as well as fostering their curiosity, inquiry and creativity.
Lysterfield Primary School is located in Lysterfield, a relatively quiet residential area in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs between Rowville and Ferntree Gully, at the base of the picturesque Dandenong Ranges.
The school has changed significantly in its long history, having opened on 9 April 1877 as State School 1866 - Narre Warren North, on two acres of land on Wellington Road donated by W.S. Lyster. In 1921, a wooden school building was erected and the school was renamed Lysterfield PS, opening with 15 pupils. In 1997, Lysterfield PS moved to its current site and students have been educated here ever since.
The school follows the Victorian Curriculum and teaching and learning is focused on the core learning areas of English and Mathematics. Other learning areas are taught within an inquiry framework or as a specialist subject. We believe that curiosity drives powerful learning and at Lysterfield, we aim to develop students who are literate, numerate and curious.
We offer specialists classes in Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Mandarin and Physical Education. We support our young readers with a literacy intervention teacher and encourage our students to think broadly through our “Challengers” program. A sustainability teacher works with different levels of students across the school, promoting sustainability and environmental issues, as well as managing the kitchen garden and cooking program. Digital technology is evident in all classrooms and students across the school have access to a range of portable devices.
The school has a student leadership program that provides opportunity for students to take on various positions of responsibility, as well as a Student Voice Council.
Facilities include general classrooms and dedicated teaching spaces for specialist subjects, a library and a gymnasium. External spaces include a soccer ground, synthetic turf play area, kitchen garden and quiet, shaded area for passive play. The school has use of an adjacent reserve for lunchtime and sports activities.
We are always upgrading our facilities and ensuring our learning spaces match the needs of 21st Century learners. Our classrooms allow for both independent and collaborative learning, with a mix of permanent and temporary buildings. Our recently upgraded common spaces in the school reflect our school pride and high expectations.
